Davis keeps his cool to see Vale to victory

Benjy Lovat14 Jul 2024 - 21:21

A thrilling chase of 234, set up by Spooner and finished by Davis see Vale win by 1 wicket!

Vale bounced back from their thrashing at Hemel Hempstead by beating Watford Town by 9 wickets with 6 balls to spare in a thrilling run chase, one of the greatest in the team's history.

Winning the toss and choosing to bowl, Vale thought they had an early breakthrough when Yoni Fingleson believed he had Shinagare strangled down the leg side, but umpire Spooner disagreed, ruling it was bat on foot. Vale's poor fielding woes continued as Steven Allweis had a regulation catch dropped by keeper Alex Haffner, and Fingleson saw another chance dropped at first slip, extending his wait for a first wicket this season.

Captain Lederman rotated his bowlers, bringing Jonny Lubin into the attack and switching Allweis to his preferred end. With a 50-run opening stand looming, Lubin struck the first blow for Vale, dismissing Shinagare for 29 with a catch by Fingleson. Allweis then removed Mahmood, caught expertly by Fingleson at long on, turning 49-0 into 49-2 in the 13th over. Watford Town continued to play aggressively, hitting three consecutive fours in the 16th over before Ben Lederman had the overseas player caught in the deep by Leor Heyman at 82-3. Fingleson’s misfortune persisted with another tough chance dropped by Heyman, as drinks came with Watford on 114-3.

After the break, Benjy Lovat and Ben Lederman bowled tightly, drying up the runs and building pressure. Lovat bowled Watford Town captain Hazarika for 29, reducing them to 141-4. Rafi Quint replaced Lederman and created opportunities, including an edge that ballooned over the keeper and a diving Lovat couldn't quite hold on to. Ali passed 50 but was caught in the deep by Heyman off Lubin’s bowling, making it 184-5. Shahid rode his luck, surviving a tough chance dropped by Lovat at extra cover but was eventually bowled by Quint. Lederman then had Sajjad caught by Lovat at cow corner, leaving Watford Town at 201-7 in the 43rd over.

Vale lost momentum in the final overs, with Allweis conceding 18 runs in the 44th and Lederman's final over going for 11, as Watford Town finished on a competitive 233-7.

Vale’s chase began watchfully with openers Adam Spooner and captain Lederman. Realizing he wouldn’t make it home for football if he played cautiously, Lederman accelerated, hitting 10 runs in 2 balls at the start of the 5th over. Spooner followed suit, taking two boundaries in the next over. Lederman was dismissed for 17 in the 8th over, leaving the team at 29-1.

Lubin and Spooner steadied the innings, running well and punishing bad balls, taking the score past 100 in the 25th over. Spooner reached his half-century and accelerated, taking 15 runs off the 26th over. However, Lubin was inexplicably run out going for a suicidal single, just short of the 100-run partnership, Vale 120-2. Heyman joined Spooner and played well but was bowled by one that kept low. Spooner continued attacking, hitting a couple of sixes, but fell for a brilliant 84, leaving Vale at 174-4 in the 36th over, needing 60 runs from 9 overs, nerves starting to set in.

Wickets started to tumble with Fingleson superbly run out, Haffner offering a simple catch, and Sam Jacobs run out by another direct hit, this one even better than the first as he looked to be running to the safe end, reducing Vale to 192-7, needing 42 runs from 5 overs. Lovat hit two boundaries, taking 11 runs off the next over, reducing the target to 31 runs from 4 overs. He was dismissed trying to hit down the ground, but Jack Davis stepped up. Davis hit two sixes, one in the 42nd over and another in the 43rd, bringing Vale to 222-8.

Quint was dismissed early in the 44th over, leaving Allweis as Davis's last partner. Allweiss pulled for 2, took a single, before Davis showed nerves of stell under pressure, hitting a lofted off drive for six followed by a straight driven four to lead Vale to a stunning victory that will live long in the memory of those that witnessed it.
